You said it shows “something like “ethernet, no driver attached””, can you paste the exact message it shows during boot? It is probably safe to ignore them. See our newsletter archive for past announcements. Some operating systems place the 3cB in low power mode when shutting down, and some PCI BIOSes fail to bring the chip out of this state before configuring it.
And the card is working – i pulled it out from a freebsd server. Subscribe to our Newsletter Product information, software announcements, and special offers.
Only users with topic management privileges can see it. I m trying to install pfSense on some old Pentium-3 comp, with 3 NICs, two of them a realtek and they work fine, bit third is a 3Com 3cTX which should be supported, at least ‘hardware’ page says so and it s not listed as a network interface, and during kernel boot – it shows something like “ethernet, no driver attached”.

Fast Etherlink XL adapters such as the 3cTX and 3cB-TX are 3ckm of 10 or Mbps data rates in either full or half duplex and can be manually configured for any supported mode or automatically negotiate the highest possible mode with a link partner. The driver tries 3c905xt detect this condition and bring the adapter back to the D0 full power state, but this may not be enough to return the driver to a fully operational condition.
This message may be printed during driver initialization on slower machines. The xl driver supports the following media types: As a result, your viewing experience will be diminished, and you may not be able to execute some actions.
For whatever the reason, the ‘MII available’ bit in the media options register on this particular equipment is not set, even though it should be the 3cTX always uses an external PHY transceiver.

Defaultis the network adapter listed? Neither the xl driver nor any other FreeBSD driver supports this modem. Note that this condition only occurs when warm booting from another operating system. In rare instances, this bit may not clear. The 3cB loses all of its PCI configuration in the D3 state, so if the BIOS does not set it back to full power mode in time, it will not be able to configure it correctly.
If you see this message at boot time and the driver fails to attach the device as a network interface, you 3c95tx have to perform second warm boot to have the device properly configured. Our Mission As host of the pfSense open source firewall project, Netgate believes in enhancing network connectivity that maintains both security and privacy. If you see this message but the driver continues to function normally, the message can probably be ignored.
The motherboard is some old Acorp, with a Pentium 3 in slot.
